====page0==== ==== THE DVD ==== My name is David, or, I A DVD. This is the story that I am telling you.\\ \\ Within it there are other stories.\\ \\ ---- so let us begin with **STORIES**, in which we describe what kind of story movie this is...\\ \\ and follow that with **STORY MANIFEST AND MANIFESTO**, in which we play for you a variety of movies of time, all of which are also condensations that exist within the pages of this Encyclopedia...\\ \\ after which, **MEANWHILE, ELSEWHERE**, we will enter **page0**, which is a movie made of many movies of time which are condensed stories which, well... let's find out! For at the moment there are 15 pages, and that is only the beginning of our story of stories, which can never ever never end, for practical reasons which will soon be explained.\\ \\ =====And the name of THOSE STORIES are THE THINK===== For instance\\ DAY 1: THE MANCHURIAN EXPLOSION [followed by 25 other Similar Movies, each and all presented to you at some point, below and beyond, and then by other series and sequels and flops and flagpoles and musicals and documentalist musings, etc!]\\ \\ \\ \\ \\ ---- ---- ==== STORIES===== \\ And so, this funny and silly and sad and dramatic and grotesque and instructive and innocent and repetitive and easy to understand secret-language'd and insistent and sleepy and save the world-y movie of stories of movies of stories of movies is called:\\ \\ \\ \\ This movie sometimes pretends to take the form of a book, as protagonist. But books are bound, this movie is not, here between the frames, the lines, the volumes, the imaginary paginations. It is simply a freedom, or as freedom should be, an interfreedom. An intermovie. It communicates, you just have to listen and see and watch and be. It is not the kind of movie you might know, which is why it is here. And so, once upon a meanwhile, elsewhere... \\ \\ And of course, an internote before the movie begins. This is not a fiction film like All About Eve, or One Battle After Another, where the sound and image combine to sell you back to yourself, in a short enough time for you to get through and complete the transaction. It is not an experimental or avant-garde film, for it is neither art nor science, nor ever ahead of the game or time of any culture. It's just a story with loops.\\ \\ ---- ===Story Manifest and Manifesto=== **THE THINK, THE CHILDREN'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF:** This is a very long movie, and paradoxically the preface to a much shorter movie. It is also a story. In this first playlist, meant to introduce that this strange place is a story, you can watch: a note on First Cinema and Last Cinema, then How To Travel, or a First Atomic Short Story, both of which are sorts of manifestos... then a little song, and then some long stories, first a story about Paris and the Evil Grid, and then the beginning of VOLUMES ABCD, and then onwards, through fiction that is true and history that is elsewhere, and so, meanwhile: .\\ \\ Hypercontext! UFOs from UNITEDST have appeared over HyperNagasaki. To save the world, movies are talked... I am in a DVD machine, I think the movies there to Judai and Juna, elderly Japanese movietalkers and UFO investigators. They then think the movies to the UFOs, who pause in the air, speaking outloud what they see. Thus, the invasion is paused. But we cannot stop or they will unpause. Ergo sum.\\ \\ And yes, the stories are aware that they do not know :)\\
====Meanwhile Elsewhere==== \\ ---- ====I am telling the stories of Dreams that no-one ever had.==== //Subject and Place of this work, known as// **THE THINK, The Children's Encyclopedia of**\\ \\ I am in HyperNagasaki, a bubble in which the entire world has been placed, in quarters.\\ \\ The city itself, and then all the divided parts: the Boston Quarter, The Paris Quarter, The Tokyo Quarter, the Manchuria Quarter, and, of course, the Lost City of New Alamogorodo.\\ \\ It is Sept 30th. Every 5 years, there is a census, and it begins tomorrow. \\ \\ Every census begins at midnight, October 1, with posters on the walls of the streets, and voices in the air of the streets and other invisible places, all asking asking asking the same Question:\\ \\ WHERE WERE YOU OCTOBER FIRST, AT MIDNIGHT? PLEASE ANSWER TRUTHFULLY!\\ \\ and so I begin to answer. I am telling the stories of Dreams that no-one ever had.\\ \\ This, of course, is true. ---- ====stories in this playlist=== ---- ===Page 0: THE MACHINE=== When the First Movie Entered the Internet, the Library Became a Transmission\\ \\ A narrator constructs a DVD machine in Nagasaki to tell stories to UFOs from UNITEDST, broadcasting telepathic movies through Judai and Juna to save the world by holding the aliens' attention—a recursive encyclopedia of dreams that no one has ever had.\\ ---- ===0-0: THE LIBRARY / THE FIRST MOVIE=== Every Encyclopedia Begins After the Last Frame\\ \\ In 1993, after the first movie enters the internet, a DVD visits the New York Public Library to read the Encyclopedia Britannica out of order, constructing a five-dimensional machine from scattered volumes while Korean submarines descend from painted ceilings and the Manhattan Projector erases every book below.\\ ---- ===0-0: HOW TO SAVE THE WORLD OR COUNTING UP=== Counting Up from Zero, Not Down from One\\ \\ On Day 1, after a long silence and a long pause (same thing), the DVD begins a song about thinking and being nothing—"I am the think"—counting upward through hundreds of repetitions while explaining that saving the world means counting forward from zero instead of backward from one, a recursive chant meant to hold the attention span of those who watch, that is to say the UFOs, because in this case there is a relationship between attention span and morality, for if they don’t pay attention, the world will end.\\ ---- ===0-0: ONCE UPON A TIME=== The Story Began When the Spelling Was a Mistake\\ \\ Once upon a time there was a long silence, then a long pause (same thing), then holes in silence, and the world said hello—with no punctuation so there was no pause— except the spelling was a mistake: and so the story began, and then it ended, and then the next day began just before dawn, and meanwhile elsewhere we try to save the world.\\ \\ ---- ===0-1: NOW, OR THE MOST RECENT=== Nature Speaks in the Language of Lost Time\\ \\ Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Nature" echoes through Concord as the narrator becomes a transparent eyeball, meditating on beauty, commodity, and spirit while fragments of conversation drift through—all recorded as the day after the First Movie went onto the internet unfolds in reverse and forward simultaneously.\\ \\ //In which we explain how the present tense might work if it existed..//\\ ---- ===0-4: DAY 01 AUTHOR NOTE=== The Write Hand and the Movie Hand Never Work Together\\ \\ The author explains THE THINK as a movie-novel born from reading encyclopedias, a frame story within frames where hundreds of hour-long films stack like DVDs and dozens of books line shelves—all part of a 26-day cycle told to UFOs from within the DVD machine to save the world.\\ \\ //Just so you know what you are dealing with, and so that you feel safe when in company of strange voices that are not trying to hypnotize anything except the orbits of the stars.//\\ ---- ===0-5: 0_THE THINK 26 DAYS-0=== Reaching Into Steam, It Kind of Hurts\\ \\ The DVD introduces itself as David, explaining the transmission chain: it makes movies and thinks them via laser light to Judai and Juna, who rethink them up and out to the UFOs, who speak them back in their unified voice—all across 26 days to save the world by thinking—reaching into the boiling steam of hundreds of pre-existing movies, pulling them out one by one to think them via THE THINK, placing them in menus of menus displayed backwards in double reverse, because that's how this DVD machine works, at least on television, and the narrator hopes you have a nice day here again and again, again, again, thanks for being, if you exist.\\ ---- ===0-6: THE FIVE DIMENSIONAL MACHINE MOVIE=== Distribution Meant Sending It Through the Internet\\ \\ After completing "Wax" in 1993, the filmmaker sends the movie onto the internet and immediately begins the next project—creating WAXWEB and an encyclopedia-machine that synthesizes writing, editing, and image creation in one place, collapsing the distinction between machine and movie to find a liberty no other tools could provide.\\ \\ //As the anorthopologist [person skilled in the use of the early 19th C. pre-cinematic Anorthoscope and also the Phenakistocope devices in Anthropological Field Work at home and in the office] Levi-Strauss said to the customer at the booksigning who tore his just purchased book in three pieces and then approached to ask for help.... here, let me have it, I'll glue it back together for you, and if that doesn't work I'll lend you some elastic bands. Thus, a simple and useless parable of how CINEMATIC SILENT SOUND MONTAGE works, via the principles of the SYNCHRONOUS and DIACHRONOUS and immaterial adhesives applied either by time or kindness, or neither, or both nether not. What Ever.// \\ ---- ===0-7: THE DOUBLOON=== The DVD Machine Thinks, Judai and Juna Transmit, the UFOs Speak\\ \\ The narrator introduces the DVD machine's operation and its telepathic relay system where thoughts are transmitted to movie narrators Judai and Juna, who broadcast to the UFOs hovering above, creating a chain of seeing and thinking that loops back through itself—all while the machine is being constructed in an anarchist underground center beneath a crashed movie theater next to the Paris catacombs.\\ \\ //In which I, a DVD, proceed to take a TAT or Thematic Apperception Test, in which I look at pages in the Movie Version of MOBY-DICK and tell you what I see, and then package these thoughts into UFO form and send them back in time to Old Mr. Melville, at that time out on his porch writing a story called THE PIZZA or the PIAZZA, and in such I way I annoy the gentleman and never receive a reply, and thus don't know what I said.//\\ ---- ===0-8: TITLE OF THIS TITLE [LIBRARY]=== The Room Where Time Turns Upside Down\\ \\ After dialing into the early internet and finding identical documents in every virtual room at CERN, the narrator disconnects and physically climbs the steps of the New York Public Library, where under painted clouds they decide to construct a story-machine by reading the Encyclopedia Britannica out of alphabetical order—pulling all 26 volumes off the shelf to begin an impossible work.\\ ---- ===0-9: FOREWARD PREVIOUSLY ELSEWHERE=== If You Lengthen the UFO's Attention Span, You Save the World\\ \\ The narrator enters the first movie on the internet even though they're probably already there, reading the library's encyclopedia in any order while the 26-day cycle begins—every day the same except different, like volume B is completely different from volume A, as the narrator remote views the future from the present tense.\\ ---- ===[0-10]: Wax or The Discovery Of Television Among The Bees [85:00, 1991]=== The First Movie On The Internet:\\ theatrical: Aug '91 || internet: 19:30 EDT on May 23 '93\\ Waxweb, the first movie website Sept '93\\ letterboxd\\ \\ ---- ===0-11: HERE AT THE FIRST FRAME, AFTER THE LAST FRAME=== You Are After the Last Frame—Please Stay Tuned While We Sing\\ \\ In 1993, the narrator returns to the New York Public Library to make phone calls to the invisible City of Books using VHS videotapes, encyclopedia volumes, and newspapers, placing them strategically on tables as time projects upside down through a hole in the ceiling—because the reading room is a telephone, a clock, and a camera unspooled by dark time entering through the spring of the obscure air.\\ ---- ---- **end** of page0\\ PAGE01\\ MENU\\
