Summary of Day 22 – Surrenders That Rehearse Themselves

Day 22 begins in Mukden, where the first surrender of the imperial broadcast era is not a singular event, but a repeating ceremony held nightly at 18:00. Judai and Juna enter the Mukden Armistice Hall, a building that officially does not exist. Inside, a group of actors—some living, some spectral—reenact the surrender of Japan as a ritual, not a memory. The chairs are creaking with memory. The floor is soft from centuries of kneeling. A copy of the original surrender is unrolled on a table, but its ink runs backward, and its language no longer binds.

They learn the treaty has been signed so many times that the text itself is worn away. It is not inked onto paper—it’s been pressed into breath. Each reenactment wipes the last clean, but the gestures remain exact. Judai takes a seat in the surrendering chair, and it is warm. Juna refuses to film. Instead, she listens.

Across Mukden, other rooms are conducting similar rites: telegrams repeating themselves, rooms lit only when apology is being spoken, uniforms pressed against walls as if by gravity. An underground chamber contains a desk labeled “Treaty Draft 0,” and inside a locked drawer is a cassette recording of silence.

Later, they travel to a northern exhibit hall, where surrender has been turned into an interactive installation. Visitors are asked to kneel, to sign, to bow. Some refuse. They are escorted gently out. Others obey. Their actions are filmed from twenty angles, but never broadcast. Judai and Juna watch as a child mimics the bow without understanding its context. “That’s how it starts,” Juna says. “The posture arrives before the idea.”

They enter a gallery of surrender protocols translated into landscape architecture—hills built from clauses, rivers aligned with radio waves. A plaque reads: “The last empire fell forward.” Judai finds a small piece of paper that reads: “Next time, don’t announce it.”

Day 22 ends back at the Mukden hall. Everyone kneels. Nothing is said. But the surrender is felt, again.
