22.16. The Last Arrangement Force
Location: Command Tent, Surrender Drill Grounds, Southern Manchuria
Description:
This army never fought a battle. The Last Arrangement Force existed only to surrender—on command, in costume, by schedule. Their field was a dusty plain ringed with bleachers that remained unfilled. Every morning at 07:00, a different surrender ritual was rehearsed: weapons placed just so, flags reversed, knees bent at geometrically calibrated angles. Juna finds a helmet tagged “CAPT. INVERSION.” Judai films the rehearsal, though the camera holds no tape. Orders are issued by invisible superiors, their signatures stamped in red light. The drills continue even after the tents begin to decay. One day, no one shows up to accept the surrender. Still, the forms are filed. Still, the salutes are given. This is the choreography of resignation—forever pending.

Very Short Story:
Judai adjusted his lens to focus on the officer bowing toward an absent opponent. Juna whispered, “There’s no one to receive this.” A whistle blew. A dozen soldiers folded their uniforms into flags and saluted the empty reviewing stand. The script called for a tearful address, which one of them delivered to the wind. Afterwards, they disbanded as if relieved of burdens they never carried. In the tent, Judai found a record titled “Surrender #404 – Rehearsal in Perpetuity.” It ended mid-track. The soldiers returned the next day anyway. Juna marked the time: 07:00, again. History repeated itself with no past.
