12.5. The Thermostat Set for Tokyo
(Location: Industrial Monitoring Station, 5km Southwest of Daiichi)
Description:
The monitoring station had only one object remaining intact—a round, beige dial labeled in both kanji and English: “Tokyo Regulation.” Beneath it, a note read: *Do not adjust. Set remotely.* The thermostat clicked slightly every few minutes, independent of temperature. “It’s still adjusting something,” Juna said. “But not here.” Judai traced a cable backward through the floor and out the wall—it was cut. Severed long ago. And yet the thermostat continued. The suggestion: this ruin still believed it was controlling the temperature of a distant, unruined Tokyo. The zone’s metaphors had hardened into delusion. Or loyalty. Or both.

Very Short Story:
Judai adjusted the dial slightly. It snapped back. Juna laughed, a sound too soft for the place. “It remembers Tokyo,” she said. “Better than Tokyo remembers it.” They left the building colder than before, though no wind blew. The illusion of purpose had chilled them.
