13.2. -** ***An Unflickered Animated Fantasy
Description:
Hidden behind one of the brighter torii gates, Judai finds a reel unspooling without motion. A film exists, yet it refuses to flicker. Each frame is a still moment too potent for repetition—hand-drawn sequences of sky beasts, rice harvests in reverse, and whispering flags above Phobos-Kyoto. Juna kneels, seeing each frame as a charm or curse. These animated images are said to have been smuggled from the Martian theaters that once screened ancestral myths to the miners of Deimos. But here, they manifest with no projector. The film floats, glowing orange. Each drawing contains an alternate history—none of them true, all of them necessary. The absence of flicker is not a failure, but a refusal: to repeat, to forget, to collapse into narrative. They must be read as talismans, not scenes.

Very Short Story:
Juna hovered her hand above the floating strip of cel drawings, sensing heat from each frame. “This is from a cinema that never existed,” she whispered. Judai traced the outline of a pig-headed emperor on frame 19, then a girl with eyes like magnets on frame 21. “Why won’t it move?” he asked. “Because it’s not trying to tell a story,” Juna replied, “only to prevent one.” She closed her eyes and saw a village once erased by ink. Now it lingered. A child’s voice whispered the title: *An Unflickered Animated Fantasy*. The reel snapped itself shut and folded into the roots of a cedar. That night, Juna dreamed the entire film—not as vision, but as fever. In the morning, she remembered none of it—except its refusal.
