Description:
On a moonlit plateau partway up Inari, a makeshift exhibit has been woven from fermented soy fibers. Suspended in tension, these “knots” form sculptures that pulse slightly in time with solstice wind. Juna explains: this was once a form of measurement. In the years after the first fusion experiments, topologists and cooks worked together to encode regional timelines into soy knots. Each twist recorded the shape of a mood—panic, hunger, devotion. These remnants were left as “viewpoints” across various ruins and shrines in Asia. On Phobos, they now glow faintly under Martian moonlight, their readings disrupted but still meaningful. Judai photographs them carefully. Later, he realizes the knots form constellations—not in the sky, but in the logic of memory.

They found the first knot caught on a branch—soft, pulsing, warm. Judai nearly mistook it for a creature. Juna smiled. “It’s a sentence. In soy.” They followed the trail: more knots strung between trees, tightening and relaxing with the wind. One was labeled “Our Current Point of View.” Another read “Before We Were Bombed.” Juna translated: these were post-emotional gauges, early tools of measurement in the ruins. Judai took photos, only to find the knots had rearranged by morning. They’d drawn a new constellation, one resembling the shape of Kyoto if it were folded in half. “We’re being given directions,” she said. “But to where?” Judai didn’t answer. The last knot vanished as they left.
