14.12. The Video Cassette Left on Every Shrine Step
Location: Ōmiwa Shrine, Main Staircase
Description:
On every step of Ōmiwa Shrine, a VHS cassette once appeared—simultaneously, perfectly spaced, facing forward. Pilgrims thought it a stunt, but the priests refused to touch them. The labels varied: *Rebroadcast of Empire, Final Cut*, *Taisho at Rest*, *News From the Frogs.* By afternoon, the cassettes began humming—emitting faint chords of Showa-era news music. Juna picked one up and smelled chrysanthemum and ozone. Judai opened one case to find magnetic tape coiled like intestines. Each step became a sentence. The stairs, walked in sequence, played a story backward. But no TV could decode it—only the body in motion, climbing, forgetting. The cassettes vanished by morning. Only the scent remained.

Very Short Story:
They climbed slowly, pausing on each step. Juna’s book recorded the vibrations—each stair a note, each cassette an omission. Judai played one on a portable deck. It screeched, then showed them arriving hours earlier. “It’s editing us,” Juna whispered. A priest passed them with closed eyes. “It’s always been this way,” he said. “Just nobody noticed the tapes before.” By the final step, Judai forgot why they were climbing. Juna reminded him: “To remember what they made us forget.”
