14.6. The VHS Tape Buried at the Zoo
Location: Nara Park, Beneath the Former Elephant Pavilion
Description:
Below the now-demolished elephant house in Nara Park lies a burial of analog scale. A VHS cassette encased in wax, marked *Ministry of Imperial Broadcasts—Playback Forbidden*, was discovered in the soil. The pachyderms once housed here are gone, but the scent of performance lingers. Judai suspects the elephants were viewers, not performers. Nearby signage once described “tape training”—a method to teach memory loops to living beings. Now, deer roam the site, oblivious but occasionally drawn to a strange hum below the earth. “This zoo,” Juna whispers, “was a test audience.” The tape is never retrieved—only sensed. The land records the war not with footage, but with silence and dust. And the elephants? They were probably the first to stop watching.

Very Short Story:
Juna knelt, pressing her ear to the soil. “Something’s playing,” she said. Judai checked his watch—its ticking had slowed. They heard trumpet sounds, distant but deliberate. Then came a human voice: “Next scene.” No source, no speaker. Just the phrase, repeated. They unearthed nothing. But when they rose, a deer stood near them, still as a figure in a paused frame. It bowed slightly, turned, and vanished. On Judai’s recorder, a new entry appeared: *Elephant Pavilion, Scene 7.* “We were filmed,” Juna murmured. “But the audience left long ago.”
