15.11. The Inari-Rail Synchronization Record
Location: Overlap Tunnel, Kyoto Railway Museum and Mount Inari
Description:
There’s a hypothesis that one specific tunnel between Kyoto Station and Fushimi Inari links to the mountain not only in space but in cinematic time. At the museum, Judai found a 16mm reel labeled “Tunnel Sync 1940-1959” stored beneath a retired electric car. When played, the film shows the view from a train—only it splices rail travel with shots from the torii tunnels ascending Mount Inari. Frames blur. Steel becomes wood. Timetables fade into chants. Juna recalibrates the projector’s speed and discovers that playing the film faster reverses certain memories. Slow it down, and suppressed images emerge: marches, resignations, treaties unsigned. The overlap tunnel never existed physically—but it keeps showing up in records. It's a splice point: between shrine and signal, oath and edit.

Very Short Story:
The reel clicked on. Judai’s notebook caught the flicker: torii, tunnel, torii, tunnel—then a pause. Juna adjusted the lens. A uniformed boy saluted in front of a shrine, then morphed into a conductor waving a flag. The scene repeated. “It’s stitched,” Judai said. “One movement, two contexts.” They played the film backward. A treaty burned. A deer bowed. The screen turned white, then flashed: “You are departing the shared line.” But they weren’t sure if it was the shrine or the track that ended.
