Description:
Hidden beneath the Annex building, this archive stores memories attributed to the Emperor’s duplicate—not the living emperor, but his ceremonial copy created for dangerous decisions or sacrificial appearances. The memories are inscribed on flexible celluloid discs labeled with feelings, not dates: *Apprehension*, *Calm*, *Surrender*, *Ambivalence*. Judai loads one into an archaic viewer. He sees a crowded station. The emperor boards alone. No faces shown. Juna finds a memo: “Do not confuse real pain with the representational strain.” These memories cannot be deleted, only rerun. They are used when the sovereign must not remember something directly, but also must not forget. The duplicate bears the trauma. The ruler remains pure.

Juna inserted a second disc: the view switched to a waiting room filled with diplomats—except all their faces were blacked out. “This isn’t censorship,” she whispered. “It’s protection.” Judai read a line: “Burden reserved for avatar.” The walls began to flicker with names in red kanji. Only one repeated: *Daiyo*, the stand-in. They left the reels untouched. Some burdens, even in fiction, could still activate. Outside, it was raining. But their clothes were already damp—as if they’d sat through a memory not their own.
