17.16. The Mirror Files of Tōdai-ji
Location: Eastern Archive Annex, Tōdai-ji Temple Grounds
Description:
A restricted wing of Tōdai-ji houses an annex where all administrative documents from the city of Nara are copied in reverse script and stored inside mirrored cabinets. Each mirrored file is believed to contain a spiritual inversion of the original—decisions never taken, oaths never sworn, histories unwritten. Juna opens one labeled “Act of Regret: March 1933” and sees her reflection frown before she feels anything. Judai notes the walls emit a soft whirring, as if memory is being projected backward. These cabinets were said to be maintained by monks trained in mirror reading, capable of reciting decrees that cancel their counterparts. The annex is built without corners. Nothing here turns directly. All movement is circuitous, as though it avoids time itself.

Very Short Story:
The mirror wouldn't reflect her face. Only her hands. Juna pressed her palm to the glass and felt it warm. Inside the drawer, a scroll unfurled itself, revealing the same decree she had seen in the public archive—only worded with hesitations and absences. Judai spoke the first line aloud. The scroll curled in protest. “It’s not for us,” he said. The room tilted slightly. All reflections shifted a few degrees. Juna retrieved a photograph from her bag and held it to the mirror. The image within the reflection smiled, though she hadn’t. “They’re waiting for the version of us who agreed,” she said. They left in silence. The drawers clicked shut behind them.
