17.1. The Garden That Doubled Itself

Location: Kasuga-taisha, First Ritual Garden

Description:
There was once a garden within Kasuga-taisha Shrine that reflected another garden beside it—stone for stone, moss for moss—but no such second garden had ever been constructed. Judai stands among the gravel rings, watching Juna walk into the center. Her footsteps echo twice. Beneath a lacquered map, the inscription reads: *“Shadow Garden, Installed 1934.”* Yet no archival photographs confirm its presence. The duplication is neither visual nor botanical, but ritual. Every rake motion, every dew-soaked prayer is mirrored in an unseen other. Tourists sense vertigo. Monks pass through rituals as if simultaneously on two planes. Juna draws a boundary line between the spaces. It vanishes when she looks away. “It’s not a garden,” she says. “It’s the performance of continuity.”

Keywords:
Kasuga-taisha doubling, gravel mirror rites, unbuilt duplicate space, ritual symmetry garden, hidden twin topography

Very Short Story:
The monk offered tea and gestured for them to sit. Judai hesitated; Juna did not. As they sat, the tea steamed in double spirals. “You’re in the second garden,” said the monk, though they saw only one. Across the path, an identical teacup formed rings in dew. Juna stood and walked across—but couldn’t reach the cup. She returned holding nothing, but her hand was wet. Judai’s notebook now contained two copies of the same page, one with unfamiliar handwriting. “Who else took notes?” he asked. The wind passed. Behind the shrine, they saw no other garden—but their footprints trailed back in pairs.
