17.23. The Sovereign Under the Pavement
Location: Buried Chamber Below Former Nara Prefectural Office
Description:
A crypt beneath the old Prefectural Office is said to house a sealed wooden box labeled *SOVEREIGN (UNUSED)*. Urban archaeologists discovered it during infrastructure renovations, but no one opened it. Officials declared it “symbolic ballast”—a counterweight to governance above. The chamber is tiled with bricks from vanished castles. A drain runs directly over the box, so that rainwater from the building trickles downward in tribute. Juna calls it “the wet archive.” Judai lowers a microphone and records faint ceremonial whispers, though no one is present. The sovereign under the pavement was never crowned, never named. He—or it—is a civic fiction given form, preserved like mythic pressure holding the city’s surface in place.
Keywords:
sealed sovereign crypt, civic ballast chamber, buried crown simulation, unused emperor deposit, infrastructural myth containment
Very Short Story:
Rain soaked the plaza above. Judai wiped his lens as Juna descended into the chamber. The box sat quietly in the center, just beyond the reach of the drain. “It’s not meant to be opened,” she said. “It’s a placeholder.” Judai nodded, then crouched and pressed his ear to the tiles. Whispers—rhythmic, ceremonial—rose faintly from the wood. Names he’d never heard. “They buried potential,” she added. “A sovereign who might be needed one day.” They didn’t stay long. But as they climbed the steps, a light flickered inside the box. Recognition, perhaps. Or waiting.
