18.11. The Chamber of Elliptical Appeals

Location: Judicial Annex B, Hakodate
Description:
Judicial Annex B was never officially listed in court records. Accessible only through a freight elevator behind a shuttered grocery depot, it contains what appears to be a mock tribunal—crescent benches, witness podiums, and twenty-four microphones wired to nothing. Judai found a logbook documenting “elliptical appeals”—legal challenges phrased in metaphor, dream logic, or reverse causality. Juna read one aloud: “I appeal the future crime of forgetting this room exists.” The acoustics are designed to feed back selectively, making certain arguments sound more convincing. One wall is coated in graphite residue, possibly from decades of erased testimonies. Judai wondered aloud if this was where unrecorded verdicts waited to be accidentally discovered. Juna replied: “Only if we’re guilty of knowing them.”

Keywords:
Hakodate secret appeals chamber, elliptical legal phrasing, metaphor trial zone, erased judicial memory, ghost court acoustics

Very Short Story:
The lights flickered once, then held. Juna sat in the “witness chair” and spoke: “This is not my voice, but the echo of an obligation.” The microphones crackled. A tone—high and brief—buzzed through the chamber. Judai walked the arc of benches, pausing at each seat as if expecting the former judges to return. One transcript lay open: a trial about whether justice can be inherited. The answer was crossed out. “Do we prosecute memory or defend it?” Juna asked. They left without speaking again. As the door closed, a red light blinked on. The court had reopened.
