19.13. 8-Bit Radio Ruin

Location: Rooftop, Former Broadcasting Bureau, Nagasaki
Description:
The broadcasting bureau tower, gutted and moss-grown, hums faintly at night. Local teenagers dare each other to climb it and report the *8-bit transmission*. Judai and Juna ascend at dusk. At the top, they find an old ham radio terminal fused to a CRT display. When powered by hand crank, it plays pixelated footage: a city rendered in NES-era graphics, eerily accurate but strangely de-peopled. The radio bleeds noise—intermittently clear voices reading governmental apologies, draft scripts, and lullabies. Juna identifies one as a resynthesized version of her mother’s voice, who never once entered a recording studio. “Retro glitch,” the graffiti says. But this isn’t nostalgia. It’s an alternate continuity.

Keywords:
Nagasaki tower, 8-bit memory, radio hallucination, pixel ghost city, analog-future crossover

Very Short Story:
The screen shows the city as it might have been if rendered in code instead of stone. Judai sees the tramline, but no trams. Juna spots her old apartment, but it’s labeled “MISSION HOUSE.” A small avatar walks the streets, tracing routes neither of them took. The voice from the radio calls their names in a monotone: “Please return.” They try to change the channel, but there is only one. When they descend, the real city seems pixelated at the edges—edges too clean, clouds in sharp squares. Judai turns around. The tower is gone. Only the voice remains, repeating: “Press Start.”
