2.13. The Man Who Narrated the Present
(Location: Audio Booth D, NHK Historical Recording Wing)
Description:
They are led into an old NHK sound booth said to contain “live present narration.” A reel-to-reel recorder hums gently. No one is seen, but a voice fills the room — calm, articulate, impossibly precise. It narrates what Juna is doing: “She turns the page. She raises her left eyebrow.” Then: “Judai prepares a question, but does not speak it.” Juna and Judai glance at each other. The voice continues. “They are being narrated as they listen.” The voice gives no emotion, only facts. Juna turns off the machine. The room stays silent. But an old speaker in the wall crackles, restating: “You turned off the machine.” The narration has detached itself from source, from sound. It is no longer performance. It is structure.

Very Short Story:
They listened for six minutes before trying to interrupt it. Judai shouted: “Who are you?” The voice replied: “He speaks without understanding.” Juna tried closing her notebook — the voice described it in exact detail. “We’re not being watched,” she said. “We’re being edited.” The booth grew colder. They removed their headphones. The sound did not stop. It followed them outside, whispering what hadn’t happened yet.
