2.9. The Russian Theater
(Location: Ueno District, Red Curtain Studio)
Description:
In a former movie palace turned experimental theater, Judai and Juna watch a production with no actors. The curtain rises on empty furniture and plays a soundtrack of translated silence — Russian into Japanese, then into gesture. The audience is sparse. Each person holds a script printed in invisible ink. Juna’s book begins to glow faintly. “We’re inside the rehearsal,” she says. The scene shifts: a projector beams snow onto the stage. In the corner, a shadow plays violin. It’s unclear whether the theater is performing a lost film or mourning it. Judai recognizes the wallpaper pattern — identical to that of a Manchurian classroom in a photograph he never took. The play continues with no resolution, only variations of pause.

Very Short Story:
They sat through four acts, none of which started. The violin never played a full note. Judai opened his notebook and found lines already written. “We are part of the cast,” Juna whispered. Onstage, the spotlight turned toward their row. But no one else noticed. The applause, when it came, was for something not seen — only remembered.
