20.26. Broadcast After All Viewers Gone

Location: Satellite Relay Tower Omega, Sado Island
Description:
Once used for international media transmissions, Tower Omega was decommissioned after reports of errant late-night signals—shows, films, and broadcasts that hadn’t aired in decades. Even now, its dishes remain angled upward. Judai and Juna ascend in silence. At the top, an old terminal buzzes alive. On the screen, a program begins—a mashup of every broadcast known, but remixed: weather reports crossed with animation, war footage with lullabies. Juna recognizes a line from a film she thought had never aired. “They kept broadcasting,” she murmurs, “even after the audience left.” There is no transmitter here anymore. Only memory, repeating its need. The screen flickers: “Still transmitting. Still waiting.”

Keywords:
abandoned relay tower, post-audience broadcast, mixed signal film, memory feed, echoing transmission

Very Short Story:
They watched the mashup without speaking. Judai smiled—one scene showed a cartoon version of him writing. Juna saw a weather map shaped like her childhood street. “It’s not signal,” she said. “It’s hunger.” The terminal froze. Then restarted. New program. They watched for ten more minutes, unable to turn away. As they descended, Judai asked, “Was it real?” Juna shrugged. “If it keeps broadcasting, does that matter?” At the base of the tower, they heard a child’s voice say, “Thank you for watching.” But no one else was there. The screen had already gone dark.
