20.6. Kikai no Tama: The Machine Orb
Location: Museum Annex Sub-Level, Nagasaki Atomic Film Storage Room
Description:
In the sub-basement beneath the Nagasaki Film Storage Annex, beyond a hallway lined with damaged film posters, sits a black orb the size of a rice bowl. Its surface reflects nothing. Labeled only in a hand-scrawled note as “Kikai no Tama,” or “Machine Orb,” the object emits a low, rhythmic pulse. Rumors say the orb was retrieved from Gunkanjima during a submerged salvage in 1966. Judai and Juna are allowed one minute in the room. The orb hums louder when a person speaks aloud. Juna reads a line from her book and suddenly sees scenes from an unknown film projected onto the surrounding concrete. The orb does not store images—it remembers intention. Its projections are shaped by regret, suppressed wishes, and atomic thresholds never crossed.
Keywords:
machine orb, emotional projection, Gunkanjima relic, Nagasaki basement, atomic threshold device
Very Short Story:
Juna placed her hand near the orb and whispered the word “forgive.” The orb’s pulse intensified, and shadows curled across the wall. A boy with half a face ran through a tunnel; two women stitched a blanket from glow-in-the-dark thread. Judai stood behind her, notebook closed, feeling the same pulse beneath his ribs. He saw himself at age sixteen, camera in hand, filming an empty street he had never visited. The orb blinked once—just once—then fell silent. They left the chamber quietly, unable to agree whether what they saw had really happened or simply wanted to.
