21.15. The Room With All Departures

Location: Hidden Office, Beneath the Booking Counter
Description:
Behind a false panel and beneath a rusted ticket booth, a narrow stair leads to a low room. Walls are lined with filing cabinets—thousands of folders, each labeled with a time and a direction. The floor map is tiled with faded arrows: NE, SW, E, Return. Judai opens one drawer: “March 7th, 1932 — Exit to Roof.” Juna finds another: “Future Unknown — No Record.” The files are thick, inconsistent, partly burned. Some are written in shorthand. Some bleed ink. In the center of the room, a table glows faintly—like an old station directory board, frozen mid-blink. A note reads: “Departures stored here to prevent overlap.” This is the sorting station of the after-journey. Each route documented, but never confirmed.

Keywords:
departure archive, directional filing, after-journey sorting, ticket booth secret, unconfirmed exits

Very Short Story:
They read through departures until their eyes burned. One read: “Exit via dream.” Another: “Rooftop temple, dusk only.” Juna whispered, “These are not all real.” “They don’t need to be,” Judai replied. He found one labeled “Her.” Inside: a note in her handwriting. “See you before you go.” Juna opened a folder marked “Joint Departure” and saw her name crossed out, then rewritten. The lights dimmed, and one drawer clicked open on its own. It contained a blank envelope. She opened it. Empty—except for the smell of matcha and iron. “That was the scent,” she said. “From the train that never left.”
