21.18. Temple Circuit Filmstrip

Location: Rooftop Projector Chamber, Former Station Dome
Description:
Above the broken dome of the station, a projection booth without a screen continues its cycle. It runs a film that spools endlessly in a temple-shaped loop—each frame etched into glass, not celluloid. The film depicts rituals inside the Saito Temple, but mirrored: monks walking backward, incense retracting into the stick. Judai threads the film through the machine and watches the projection fall onto the cracked station floor below. “The loop isn’t closed,” Juna observes. “It always leaves one frame undone.” She finds that missing frame beneath her book—pressed flat, blank, waiting. When inserted, the projector flickers, then stalls. “It doesn't want to end,” she says. And so the film plays again, this time slower, with one less reversal.

Keywords:
glass film loop, reversed ritual, temple projector, frame unspooled, unfinished loop

Very Short Story:
They stood beside the humming booth, its lens aimed nowhere. Judai turned the crank, and glass images flared down onto concrete. Juna watched herself in the frame—walking, then vanishing. “This is from yesterday,” she said. “But reversed.” The frame after that was blank. “We’re making it now,” he replied. She found a fragment of incense still warm. They spliced it into the loop. The projector accepted it, but the reel slowed. They sat beside it. When the sun crossed the booth’s rusted window, the film burned slightly—searing a new frame into memory. This one was titled only “Again.”
