21.23. Time Ticket Booth
Location: East Vestibule Adjacent to the Arch
Description:
An old kiosk, thought demolished, reappears on foggy mornings beside the remaining arch. Its shutters open like eyelids, revealing a booth labeled “Time Tickets.” The clerk is absent. In their place: a set of dials, an abacus, and a velvet pouch of coins from eras that never overlapped. Customers leave no payment, only intent. Juna slides in a written memory; a bell rings, and a stub appears—“Transfer Valid for Year Unknown.” Judai tries the dial: it spins violently, then stops on a date one week from today. The ticket prints in mirror text. “Can we use them?” he asks. She pockets both stubs. “We already did.”
Keywords:
chronological kiosk, time stub, non-currency exchange, mirrored ticket, absent clerk
Very Short Story:
The fog thickened as they approached the booth. Judai watched a child vanish just after receiving a ticket. Juna placed her hand over the velvet pouch—felt only silence. She wrote the phrase “first departure” and fed it into the dial. A stub hissed out. “Transfer to Line 0.” He stared. “Where’s that?” She smiled. “That’s where we begin forgetting.” A second stub emerged, this one blank. “Keep it,” she said. “In case we’re asked.” Neither used their tickets that day. But neither tore them, either.
