22.4. Ghost Consulate Surrender Ceremony

Location: Former British Legation, Dairen
Description:
Each Thursday, a surrender ceremony is staged inside the ruins of the British Legation—though no living officials remain. The flags outside flutter, torn into riddles. A clock chimes thirteen. Judai enters the hall, guided by a boy reciting lines from a missing treaty. Juna records the proceedings: five actors walk in slow cadence, exchange ceremonial words, and bow toward an empty chair. One then vanishes in smoke. The remaining four bow again. At the center lies a sealed envelope, addressed to “The World That Lost.” No one opens it. The ceremony repeats—always Thursday, always dusk. It ends before the night falls, as if completion might invite real consequence.

Keywords:
abandoned legation, empty-chair treaty, weekly performance, smoke departure, sealed surrender

Very Short Story:
Juna unfolded her tripod. “Film everything,” Judai said. But the camera refused to record. “No tape?” she asked. “Or no memory,” he replied. The actors walked again. Bow. Speak. Vanish. A fourth turned and nodded directly at them. “You’re late,” he said. Then left the frame. Judai reached for the envelope. It felt warm. “Don’t,” Juna said. “That letter is waiting for someone who no longer believes.” They left the chair unfilled. The hall reset itself.
