23.10. The Broken Pen of Imperial Documents

Location: Kyoto Prefectural Records Office, Locked Wing

Description:
Behind a sealed office once reserved for high-level clerks, a pen rests in a glass box. It once signed a treaty that was never ratified. The ink has long dried, but the nib glows under certain light conditions. Judai asks to examine it. Juna takes a photo and deletes it. “It shouldn’t be archived,” she says. “Only remembered.” The records around it have holes—entire sections redacted or misfiled into unrelated cases: marriage licenses, cemetery permits, post-blast street renaming. But the pen insists. It recalls what the paper erased. They say the final signature was forged—by the wind that came through the broken window during signing. That gust is still archived, somewhere in the climate logs.

Keywords:
imperial pen, unratified treaty, false archive, wind signature, deletion resistance

Very Short Story:
Juna tapped the glass. The pen didn’t move. Judai read aloud from a weather log: “14:03, wind shift from southeast.” They traced the signature—curved like hesitation. “It wasn’t meant to be final,” she whispered. “But it was.” They didn’t ask to take the pen. Instead, they copied its shape into memory. As they left, a breeze moved the curtains.
