24.21. Return Code: Starline 54
Location: Signal Repeater Station C-5, Cliffside Odaka
Description:
On the highest ledge overlooking the sea, Station C-5 emits a transmission once every 17 hours. The tone changes with the tide. The signal includes no voice, only pulses—long, short, long, short, until the fifth sequence, when a voice says, “Return.” Judai traces the signal path and finds the wires lead nowhere, vanishing under a moss-covered stone etched with “Starline 54.” Juna stands by the sea and feels her name called, though no one speaks it. The frequency has been transmitting since 1972, when a fishing trawler disappeared with its entire crew after reporting “a light shaped like a question.” They were searching for the galaxies. Perhaps this was their answer.
Keywords:

Very Short Story:
Juna placed her ear to the repeater box. It didn’t speak, but it remembered. A phrase broke through the static: “Come back if—” and then silence. Judai charted the pulse rhythms. “It’s Morse,” he said. “But also a lullaby.” They waited until the fifth loop. The voice whispered “Return” again. Juna turned to the sea and replied, “We never left.” The transmission stopped. They stood in the stillness of a conversation older than the station.
