25.23. The Monument to Something That Never Happened

Location: Coastal Road 2, South Marker

Description:
Just beyond the last curve before the sea wall stands a large stone slab, uninscribed. It is not marked on any map, and no resident claims to have seen it erected. But it’s always been there. Some say it commemorates an avoided catastrophe. Others say it marks an event not yet unfolded. Judai studies its angles—they do not add up. Juna circles it three times, then stops. “We’ve been here before,” she says, but her notes show no such record. The monument reflects light oddly. Shadows cling to it in the wrong direction. People leave flowers, even when they don’t know why. Its silence is not peaceful—it’s anticipatory.

Keywords:
pre-event monument, Odaka anomaly, anticipatory silence, unmarked stone, shadow misalignment

Very Short Story:
They didn’t mean to stop. But the road bent, and the stone appeared. Juna placed her hand against it. Cold. Judai checked the compass. Spinning. “We were warned,” he muttered. “But by what?” A family drove by, slowed, and bowed. No one looked twice. The sea growled. Clouds stilled. “Let’s leave,” Juna said. But the path back was longer than before. They had been marked. They did not know by whom.
