25.4. The Lantern Circuit of Unmarked Graves

Location: Forest Border, Northern Evacuation Road, Odaka

Description:
At the forest’s edge where the evacuation buses never returned, handmade lanterns have been tied to branches using red tape and fiber cord. They form a spiral—visible only at night, only from above. Juna counts 108. Judai says, “That’s how many didn’t come back.” But there are no records. Only light. The lanterns don’t flicker. Each contains a small sheet of paper with a line of poetry, all unsigned. Juna finds one that reads, “I wasn’t lost—I was returned by another route.” A child’s mitten hangs on a branch. This is not a graveyard. This is a message board between worlds.

Keywords:
Odaka forest spiral, handmade lanterns, unrecorded dead, poetry offerings, nocturnal signal

Very Short Story:
They came at dusk. Juna lit one lantern with a breath. It glowed blue, then green. Judai followed the spiral inward until it disappeared—no center, just curve. “There’s no grave,” she said. “Only direction.” The last lantern had no flame, only warmth. A note inside read: “If you read this, you are the keeper.” They walked back without turning. The forest hummed as if powered by breath. Juna never let go of the mitten.
