25.7. The Gate to the Future That Was Cancelled
Location: Odaka Industrial Testing Grounds
Description:
In the ruins of a development site meant to simulate the smart cities of 2020, there stands a steel gate welded to nothing. It opens inward, then outward, but leads nowhere. Its design mimics those found in airports—automated, mirrored, silent. Juna finds it facing an empty field. When she passes through, her book flips open to a blank page. Judai throws a rock through it. It disappears mid-air, reappears ten feet behind them. The site was once called “Zone F: Projection Corridor,” but the sign rusted away. This was the entrance to a possible world, shelved by the disaster, overwritten by real grief. The future waits behind the gate—but it’s the wrong future now.

Very Short Story:
Judai touched the mirrored gate. His reflection didn’t follow. Juna walked through and back again, holding her breath. “Nothing changed,” she said. “That’s the problem,” Judai replied. They stood in the empty test zone, listening to wind bounce off metal. A fox darted through the gate, paused, then vanished into weeds. Juna swore it had no shadow. They opened the gate once more. The hinges sighed. Behind them, the air stilled as if watching. The future hadn’t arrived—it had chosen not to.
