26.16. The Clock That Struck Only Once
Location: Namie Emergency Bell Tower
Very Short Story:
They climbed the rusted stairs with reluctance, expecting silence. Judai tapped the bell casing—dead metal. Juna, eyes closed, leaned into the wind. A tone rose—not from the bell, but from the air itself, like memory forged into sound. “I heard it,” she whispered. Judai checked his recorder: nothing. They descended in confusion, passing a boy in a radiation suit who waved, then faded like a reflection. At the bottom, a sign fluttered: “End of Alerts.” A final chime echoed, light as breath. “That wasn’t mechanical,” said Judai. “It was a warning.” “Or a welcome,” Juna answered. The town behind them remained still, but the air had shifted. They walked on, marked by a note that wasn’t played.
