26.19. The Museum of Explanations That Failed
Location: Iwaki Interpretive Pavilion
Very Short Story:
The docent's voice looped—“What happened… was…”—then cut out. Juna stared at three identical screens, each telling a different story. Judai laughed without joy. “Is this clarity or camouflage?” he asked. A child traced a disaster timeline backward until it looped into her own birth. In the “Known Unknowns” wing, a single light bulb flickered like an interrogation. A plaque declared, “All exhibits provisional.” Outside, wind ripped the museum brochure from Juna’s hand; it landed folded into a shape resembling the island itself. “It’s not lying,” she said. “It’s trying.” They left through the entrance, disoriented. In the parking lot, Judai found his own notebook in the museum’s lost-and-found—though he hadn’t lost it. Inside, a map with no labels.
