3.8. Census of the Disappeared
(Location: Records Room 44X, Shinkyo Government Annex)
Description:
In an underground room marked “Census: Discontinued,” Judai and Juna find drawers filled with empty forms. The instructions are clear: *Name yourself into being.* The listed categories are abstract—“Mood of Origin,” “Preferred Epoch,” “Family of Echoes.” Juna completes a form and watches the ink vanish. “They counted absences,” she realizes. A monitor flashes a list of 14 million names—none verified. These were citizens of the unmade country, documented but never summoned. Judai pulls a card: “Entry invalid—identity loop detected.” The census doesn’t end; it expands. One drawer contains a blank form with Juna’s handwriting already present. “When did I fill this out?” she asks. The room replies by printing her signature again.

Very Short Story:
The room was cold. Rows of cabinets whispered as Judai and Juna opened them. Juna’s name appeared on a form she hadn’t written. “I think we’re being pre-counted,” she said. Judai filled out a blank card, only to watch the ink disappear into the paper. “Do you think we belong here?” he asked. “Or are we just the ones remembering those who did?” The terminal printed a receipt for a population of zero. Yet drawers kept opening with more names. “I think the more we investigate,” Juna murmured, “the larger the nation becomes.” They walked out without answers. Behind them, a printer whirred, printing their exit. The census continued, its citizens growing more real each time someone looked.
