4.4. The Burned Stone of Playing Musicians

(Location: National Theater Perimeter, Akasaka)

Description:
At the edge of a theater built over a crater, there stands a single scorched stone. It is not labeled. Musicians once gathered there, rehearsing state performances during the war. Some scores were written in blood—traced from maps, not notes. The stone bears the faint imprint of a cello’s endpin. Judai listens: the wind hums in 3/4 time. Juna reads from a crumpled program found in a nearby drain: “Tonight: The Harmony of Fire.” The concert never took place. Instead, the building was shelled, then rebuilt, then renamed. The stone remained. New musicians pass by without stopping. But Juna touches it gently, and says it plays back. Only for her. Only once.

Keywords:
musical remnants, fireproof memory, concert of war, Akasaka crater, unplayed performances

Very Short Story:
The program was wet, torn, and printed in too many languages. Judai wondered if any of the songs had ever been sung. “You don’t need an audience to make something dangerous,” Juna muttered. The stone held heat, even on a cold day. They didn’t know whose cello had leaned there—but the mark was specific. She hummed a note, and the air responded. They stood still. For a moment, the theater grew quiet inside. Rehearsals forgotten, orders disbanded, chords buried. And from somewhere deep below, as if through layers of concrete and regret, a minor chord rose—unaccompanied.
