4.6. Echo Marshal at the Faultline Barracks
(Location: Faultline Barracks, Yokohama Shelf)
Description:
Atop a shifting shelf of reclaimed land sits the cracked ruin of Faultline Barracks—constructed in anticipation of an invasion that never came. Judai and Juna pass through rooms split by tremors, each filled with mannequins posed in parade formations. One speaks—an old speaker hidden inside its chest stutters out “Marshal…Echo…Marshal…” before crackling into loops. Juna notes the uniforms are mismatched: peacekeepers wearing combat stripes, and medics pinned with court medals. Judai leans against a wall and hears a hollow resonance—a call and response embedded in the concrete. A war was staged here, perhaps as rehearsal. Or perhaps it ended before it was announced. Outside, the horizon seems to sway. “The country trained itself to remember a battle,” Juna says, “that it had no intention of surviving.”

Very Short Story:
The mannequins turned ever so slightly when no one looked. Judai waved his hand across their unblinking eyes, but no recognition stirred. One figure raised its arm in salute every thirty-seven seconds, then lowered it, then did nothing for an hour. Juna recorded the voice repeating “Echo Marshal,” trying to sync it to the fractures in the wall. None aligned. Dust floated like confetti after a parade. “These were not defenders,” she said. “They were memorists.” A chalkboard listed drill routines with dates that preceded the war. When they left, a new echo followed: their own names, whispered back with ranks they'd never held.
