5.20. The Portrait Hall with No Faces
(Location: Corridor 9, Manchurian Exhibition of Loyal Service)
Description:
A vast corridor lined with gilded frames, each once containing the face of a celebrated bureaucrat or national contributor. Now, every portrait has been scraped clean. Beneath each, an engraved plaque remains: *Loyal in Silence*, *Contributor to the Intended*, *Faith Without Witness.* Juna sees signs of intentional erasure—knife marks, solvent stains. Judai finds a frame labeled *Judai (Speculative).* The hallway ends in a mirrored door that never opens. “This is where legacy was unchosen,” Juna murmurs. The paint dust still clings to the floor. A faint smell of varnish lingers in the air. The room’s acoustics return every footstep like a slow question.
Keywords:
##deliberate erasure
##faceless remembrance
##reversed legacy
##commemorative ambiguity
##silent renown
Very Short Story:
Juna stared at a blank frame and imagined it frowning. Judai sketched his own reflection, then tore the paper. “They commemorated the possibility, not the person,” he said. Dust spiraled gently upward. A sound system played applause, recorded decades ago. Juna bowed.
