6.10. Entry for the Sleep Rotation
(Location: Rotating Chair Complex, JAOC Sleep Observation Ring)
Description:
This circular chamber, hidden beneath the central telescope dome, contains 52 numbered chairs, each designed for enforced national sleep. Above each is a halo light, flickering in rhythm with imagined circadian cycles. “Used during years of political suspension,” the plaque says. Juna reads a manual: *Sleep Rotation Protocols for State Maintenance*. It instructs sleepers when to dream of victory, shame, or forgetting. Judai sits briefly in Chair 17. Instantly, his breath synchronizes with the central metronome. “They measured unconscious compliance,” Juna notes. A speaker repeats: *Sleep was not abandonment. It was upkeep.* One chair remains warm. Juna marks it as used today. They exit quietly, careful not to disturb whatever still sleeps in Chair 52.

Very Short Story:
Judai dozed involuntarily. A dream began: a courtroom full of sleepers voting silently. Juna shook his shoulder and he awoke gasping. “I was in a meeting,” he said. “And no one wanted to leave.” The metronome stopped. Chair 17 reclined by itself. “They didn’t need loyalty,” Juna said. “Just duration.” Outside the chamber, the sun hadn’t moved. Or had they? They did not sit again. But Chair 52 still waited.
