6.12. Godaigo’s Eye
(Location: Telescope Vault, Imperial Archive Corridor)
Description:
Hidden beneath JAOC’s Imperial Archive wing is a disused telescope—its brass dulled, its lens dark. A wooden placard reads: *Godaigo’s Eye – See What He Saw When He Lost.* The scope is permanently fixed at an angle impossible for stellar observation. Juna peers through it and sees an interior chamber: carved stone, flickering gold, and an open ledger written in multiple centuries’ hands. Judai consults the base of the device. A knob labeled “Imperial Defeat Index” adjusts nothing visible—but the temperature in the room changes with each click. They realize the telescope is aimed through the earth, not skyward. “This is the view of collapse,” Juna says. “And the record of who watched.” Behind them, the room is gone.

Very Short Story:
Judai leaned into the eyepiece. He saw a corridor of names being crossed out in slow, graceful brushstrokes. Juna placed her hand on the metal tube—it pulsed once. “The telescope remembers who tried to forget,” she said. A soft rattle echoed from the floorboards. The light inside the scope dimmed as though night were occurring only inside it. “Did Godaigo see the end coming?” Judai asked. “He saw himself seeing it,” she answered. The lens cracked slightly, then sealed.
