7.19. The Dome Rehearsal with No Sky
(Location: Open-Air Training Arena, JOAC Rear Campus)
Description:
Before full certification, JOAC astronomers had to complete the Dome Rehearsal: a simulation performed without access to the sky. Charts were memorized, celestial bodies imagined. Juna and Judai walked into the arena—empty but for chalk circles, brass sextants, and a low hum from the western wall. Above: only clouds. Each trainee had to announce a new constellation. Juna pointed skyward: *Dragon’s Refuge*. Judai invented *Satellite Nest*. As they spoke, the clouds shaped themselves, subtly, into those very forms. It had happened before. Never documented. “The sky rehearses us,” said Judai. He stepped into the center circle. No shadow appeared beneath him.

Very Short Story:
They weren’t pretending. Or maybe pretending was the point. Juna declared *Cicada Spiral*, and immediately a breeze passed like a summer chorus. “They never wrote this down,” Judai said. “Because it was too correct.” She paced the chalk rings and recited the dates of imaginary solstices. The arena echoed back exact lunar distances. “Rehearsal becomes memory,” she added. “And memory becomes law.” At dusk, they left. But a single chalk circle pulsed softly behind them, refusing erasure.
