7.4. The Miniature Invasion Retreats
(Location: Exhibition Hall H, Hiroshima Dome Boat)
Description:
They entered the floating hall of the Hiroshima Dome Boat expecting history—but encountered instead a glass diorama titled *Miniature Invasion, Retreated*. It depicted twenty tiny alien crafts abandoning a scaled-down Tokyo Tower, their wings folded, their descent mournful. Visitors once stood in this room to watch the model re-enact the day Earth “declined” the invasion. On replay loops, the city’s buildings breathed in and then vanished, politely yielding to absence. Judai pressed a button marked “Don’t.” It triggered a mirrored sequence: the invasion arriving instead. Juna watched as the UFOs reconstituted themselves from ash. “Retreat is an instruction,” she muttered. The model glitched—one invader never left. It rotated slowly, staring at her from across the model’s plexiglass field. She smiled and stepped back.

Very Short Story:
The model felt real. Too real. As Judai bent to see the diorama's underside, he found notes etched there: “This version loops only if watched.” Juna walked the perimeter of the display until she saw her reflection merged with the tiny city. One building in the model had her initials carved on the roof. “It’s not an invasion,” she said finally. “It’s a rehearsal.” Judai looked up at the glass dome above. In it, twenty stars were now visible—each matching the departing ships. But the twenty-first remained still. They both knew not all departures were successful. Sometimes, retreat was just a form of waiting.
