8.10. Dragonflies Over the City of Delay
(Location: Takasaki Perimeter Fence, Twilight Field)
Description:
Just beyond the final fencepost, dragonflies clustered in the air like a constellation. They weren’t natural—each bore a number, each glowed faintly when the wind passed. “They’re not flying,” Judai said. “They’re holding.” Juna walked through them, unfazed. Her book pulsed slightly, like a Geiger counter. The insects marked something—perhaps time’s resting place, or a path only readable to memory. In the field below, a network of delay loops was etched into the dirt, like circuitry too old to operate. But above: the pattern of dragonflies shifted as she moved, forming kanji, then erasing them. Judai stood beneath one. Its wings buzzed a single frequency. He recorded the tone. When reversed, it spelled a place neither of them had visited. Yet.
Keywords:

Very Short Story:
Juna reached toward one dragonfly, and it paused in midair, wings fully spread. She saw something written beneath: *when is a where.* Judai captured a photograph. Later, the image showed only static. “We’re not meant to keep them,” Juna said. The dragonflies lifted as one, rotated ninety degrees, then stilled again. They formed a date, though neither recognized its meaning. Somewhere, a train whistle blew backward. Juna closed her book. “We’ll return,” she said. But the field was already gone, replaced by a road neither remembered crossing.
