8.4. Mirror on the Wall of a Mine
(Location: Decommissioned Viewing Shaft, Southern Slope)
Description:
It looked like a mirror, but it had no surface—only recursion. Juna found it embedded in a collapsed shaft outside an abandoned mine northeast of Takasaki. The surface shifted as they approached, displaying not themselves, but prior versions of the mine, layered with the people who once worked there. One miner lit a lantern. Another pointed to the camera. Judai noted: “The mirror is chronological, not reflective.” Their faces blurred into others, faces with the same expressions but not their own. “It’s not memory,” Juna said. “It’s endurance.” Behind the mirror, the shaft walls pulsed, suggesting an engine still warm. As they left, the mirror flashed one last scene: two figures standing precisely where they were now, deciding whether to turn back.

Very Short Story:
Juna stepped forward. The mirror pulsed. It showed her childhood hands holding a geologist’s hammer—an event she never lived. Judai saw himself lighting a lantern he didn’t own. “The mirror is dreaming,” he said. They stared longer. Soon, faces of ancestors—real or not—overlaid their own. The shaft behind them vibrated slightly, as though awakening. “What happens if we step through?” Juna asked. “I think we become echoes,” Judai replied. But they didn’t step through. They turned, walked out of the mine, but took with them a feeling that they had stayed. That some version of them was still standing there, waiting to become visible again, as soon as someone else arrived to look.
