9.2. Station of the Loyal Frogs
(Location: Abandoned Platform, Takasaki Outskirts)
Description:
There was no official record of this station. But it was there—rails intact, schedule board listing only the word “Now.” Frogs sat on every bench, evenly spaced, staring at the empty track. Juna observed their posture: formal, still, anticipatory. Judai found a torn leaflet pinned under a frog’s foot. It listed signal codes used during Emperor Taisho’s final broadcasts—modified frequencies shaped like amphibian vocal ranges. “They’ve been waiting for the return message,” she murmured. An antique signal lamp blinked once in red, twice in green. The frogs answered in perfect unison, ribbits echoing off concrete like sonar. The whole place smelled of ozone and ink. Juna bowed slightly. “Let’s not interrupt the transmission.”

Very Short Story:
Judai sat next to the largest frog. It didn’t flinch. He leaned back and mimicked its stillness. Ten minutes passed. Then the tracks began to hum—not metal-on-metal, but like a bowed string. Juna listened closely: the tone was spelling something. “One station left,” she translated. Behind them, the schedule board now said: “Always.” They stood, bowed to the frogs, and stepped off the platform. None of the frogs moved. But Judai swore one of them nodded.
