13.19. -** ***Portrait of the Archivist of Nothing

Location: Fireproof File Room, Kyoto Census Ministry (Abandoned Wing)
Description:
In the last room of the abandoned Ministry wing, a single painting remains. No frame, no label. It shows a man writing with a matchstick on water. His desk is surrounded by names scratched out, reversed, or mirrored. Juna studies the strokes—none are brush. The entire portrait is burned into the canvas, layer by layer. “This was done with heat,” Judai notes. On a shelf nearby: thousands of blank cards, each with a hole punched in a different location. They were records for people who never registered. The Archivist, as Juna names him, seems to guard forgetting. He does not record what happened, only what didn’t. Above the door: *Silence is the most complete document.*

Keywords:
##matchstick portraiture
##Kyoto archive silence
##nonexistent population records
##reverse-naming registry
##burnt document aesthetics

Very Short Story:
Juna traced the man’s eyes—he wasn’t looking at them. He was watching a fire that hadn’t started yet. Judai held one of the blank cards to the light. It showed nothing, but felt heavy. “We weren’t meant to find him,” he said. “He only appears after memory collapses.” A wind blew through the sealed room. The portrait flickered. For a moment, the Archivist’s hand moved—his match still writing. “He’s recording now,” said Juna. “Us.” She dropped the card back in its box. They left without speaking.
