20.10. Broadcast from the Empty Booth

Location: Rooftop Radio Tower, Nishizaka Hill

Description:
A rusted broadcast booth atop Nishizaka Hill still powers on once per year—no known source. When it activates, an emergency light flashes three times, and a low-frequency signal goes live. The booth is empty. The microphone, ancient and dust-choked, emits a hum that modulates into patterns. Judai detects Morse code but can’t decipher it. Juna leans in and hears her own name. The booth window reflects nothing—only a soft pulse, like the end of a reel. Records from the 1940s indicate this was once used to air civil defense instructions. Now it seems to communicate with no audience. Some nights, televisions flicker with frames labeled: “You are still inside.” But no one knows what it means.

Keywords:
empty broadcast, Nishizaka Hill, civil defense echo, voice recognition, transmission from past

Very Short Story:
Judai tuned the signal by hand, sweat gathering on his brow. A pulse, then a whisper: “We begin now.” But there was no one. Juna stood beside the microphone and heard breathing that wasn’t hers. The broadcast didn’t replay—it rewrote. Somewhere below, the streets of Nagasaki flickered in sympathy. TVs turned on in unoccupied apartments. Radios picked up lullabies in languages lost to the war. Judai scrawled in his notebook, but the pages erased themselves as he wrote. When they left, Juna left her book open on the control board. The hum followed them down the hill, and in the distance, a streetlight blinked once—then again.
