23.20. The Gate That Loops
Location: South Temple District, Unlabeled Shrine Gate
Description:
They pass through the same torii gate three times and end up back at the entrance of the temple street. The first time, the sky is blue. The second, dusk. The third, raining lightly—though no clouds are visible. Judai leaves a coin. It isn’t there when they pass again. Locals avoid this path, saying “it returns what you forgot.” Juna tests it: holds her breath while crossing, eyes closed. On the fourth pass, she finds a leaf folded into her notebook that hadn’t been there. Inside the leaf: a stamped temple seal from a monastery long destroyed. “It’s correcting us,” Judai says. “Or erasing the way we got here.”
Keywords:
repeating gate, torii anomaly, temple correction, folded leaf seal, passage confusion
Very Short Story:
Each time they passed through, something shifted—light, air, even their footing. “I think it knows who’s watching,” Juna said. On the fifth pass, the path ahead was filled with fog. A cat sat just outside the gate, refusing to move. Judai reached for his compass—it spun. The fog cleared. They were back at the station. But now, their train tickets had different times.
