23.21. Cathedral Reflection without the Cathedral
Location: Near Ōura Catholic Church, Sloped Rain Pavement
Description:
They spot the reflection first—arched windows, a stained-glass rose, and the faint trace of Latin lettering. But there is no structure above. Where the Ōura Cathedral once stood, there’s only empty space. Yet in the puddle below: full façade, perfectly symmetrical. Judai photographs it. The photo reveals extra figures in the reflected doorway—monks facing away, walking backward. Juna holds her book over the water; the reflection shows text in French. She flips a page: it bleeds into Latin, then dissolves. It begins to rain again. The image fades, but does not distort—it simply stops responding. “It only wants to be seen from underneath,” she whispers. Judai never finds the photos again. The memory remains clearer than anything they recorded.
Keywords:
reverse cathedral, rain mirror, monastic reflection, Latin bleed, memory apparition
Very Short Story:
They never went into the cathedral. It wasn’t there. But the reflection gave enough—too much, maybe. Judai saw a priest smile from the mirror and nod once. “He was in the film,” he muttered, but didn’t say which. Juna turned away, already wet. “Don’t step on it,” she warned. They circled the puddle, walking through holy light made of sky and asphalt. The water rippled. The church vanished again.
