26.6. The House with One Occupant Per Decade

Location: Iwaki Resettlement Grid, Parcel 34B

Description:
This wooden house, set back from a path of overgrown cherry trees, receives a new resident every ten years. The house does not age between them. Clothes remain pressed in drawers. The tea kettle is warm. Juna finds a calendar opened to the current month, with a date circled—tomorrow. Judai finds a note in the wall: “Don’t change anything. She won’t like it.” They do not know who “she” is. Each room is curated like memory suspended in sap—nothing rots, nothing progresses. The neighbors deny its existence. Yet records show consistent occupancy by unrelated individuals—each vanishing after a year. The house is rumored to be a listening post, or a sleepwalk shrine. Juna suspects it’s waiting for someone who has never arrived.

Keywords:
decade tenant, suspended memory, curated interior, vanishing occupant, listening house

Very Short Story:
They entered with care. Dustless floors, undisturbed sheets. Juna ran her fingers along a clean cup—still warm. “There was someone here this morning,” she said. Judai pointed to the calendar. “That’s today.” “No,” she corrected, “it’s always the day before they disappear.” She found a recording device tucked in a drawer. It played nothing but breath. A closet opened into another hallway—identical, but reversed. “Should we leave?” Judai asked. “We already did,” Juna replied. But neither moved.
