5.7. The Theater That Reversed the Ending
(Location: Hall of Confluence, Harbin Cultural Pavilion)
Description:
It was a traveling exhibit turned permanent: a small cinema with mirrored walls and retractable seats, originally designed to teach unity through drama. The film shown here once ended with peace, then was re-edited to end with sacrifice, then again to end with silence. Now it ends mid-scene, before resolution. Judai finds a control panel labeled *Adjust Narrative Arc.* Juna reads a plaque: *Version 6: Empathy Neutral.* The ushers wear masks of smiling ancestors, and their movements are choreographed to avoid direct answers. Beneath the screen, a hidden compartment contains 26 unused endings—each titled with a verb: *Submit. Rebuild. Vanish.* Visitors leave confused. The theater thanks them with the phrase: *You have participated in national ambiguity.*

Very Short Story:
They sat through three versions of the film. None matched the posters outside. Judai asked the usher what the real ending was. The usher bowed and offered a mask. “You decide,” they said. Juna watched the projector, not the screen. Its reel sputtered, hesitated, reversed. She stood and applauded nothing. The crowd followed. As they left, a child asked what the movie meant. Juna paused, held her book tightly, and said, “It means they were never sure how it ended.”
