5.8. The Lantern Festival Without Fire
(Location: Xinjing Lakefront, Restricted Perimeter)
Description:
Once a year, for two hours at dusk, citizens gathered at the man-made lake near the palace replica to release paper lanterns. But fire was banned after the 1941 Archive Combustion, so lanterns now glow with cold LED. Each one bears the name of an erased city or lost campaign. Juna reads from a lantern that says: *Z City – May It Be Invented Again.* Judai counts 113 lanterns shaped like microphones. Children decorate them with inkbrush patterns that blur when lit. Guards monitor spacing with tape measures. A loudspeaker repeats: *Please release within the designated grief zone.* The lake reflects nothing—only sky. When the event ends, drones gather the lanterns for shredding.

Very Short Story:
Juna folded her own lantern—shaped like a bee, named after her sister’s lost district. Judai hesitated, then added one marked simply *Us.* As they placed the lanterns on the lake, the water stayed still. “Even the reflection doesn’t return,” he whispered. Children nearby sang a lullaby without melody. A drone dipped too low, snagging a lantern mid-flight. Juna stared upward. “They're archiving grief now,” she said. The drone blinked twice in reply.
