7.12. The Imperfect Reflection of Emperor Taishō
(Location: Shadow Corridor, Rear Mausoleum Wall, Mitaka)
Description:
Behind the Emperor Taishō mausoleum is a corridor of black stone, aligned to catch only afternoon light. Here, visitors are invited to view their reflection in a series of concave mirrors. These mirrors are not symmetrical. They are warped by design, mimicking how the emperor saw himself in his final years—through fevered eyes, shaken by neurological tremors, distorted by isolation. Juna stepped into the corridor and found her image multiplied, fragmented. One mirror showed her with Judai’s notebook. Another showed her gone. The last reflected not her face, but a field of chrysanthemums wilting in slow reversal. Historians called it *reflection protocol.* But the groundskeepers referred to it quietly as *Taishō’s apology.*

Very Short Story:
Juna turned her head in the final mirror and saw a younger Judai walking beside a different version of herself. “I think we came here once,” she whispered. The chrysanthemum field appeared again, this time swaying as if under lunar wind. She stepped back, but her reflection stayed. In the stone beneath her feet, names of previous visitors glowed faintly—none familiar, yet each strangely precise. One inscription read: *If the emperor forgot, let us remember otherwise.* Juna placed her hand on the mirror, then turned, letting her reflection remain behind.
