7.13. The Folding Film That Watches You First

(Location: Lost Film Cabinet, JOAC Archive Sub-Basement)

Description:
Stored in a sealed cabinet labeled “unwatched, unwatchable,” Judai and Juna discovered a folded film. Not “folded” as in crumpled—but geometrically, like origami. The reels had bent themselves across layers of time, splicing unrelated events: mushroom clouds over school recitals, UFOs over Nara deer, Queen Betty rendered in Noh mask. Before they could thread the reel into the projector, it began to hum. Then pulse. A warning label flickered on the screen: *This film observes first.* Juna lifted the book from her lap. Its cover burned slightly. Judai adjusted the projection gate. But the frame had already opened—and they were inside it.

Keywords:
##origami film geometry
##projector with sentience
##Queen Betty in Noh
##folded chronology reels
##mutual observer protocol

Very Short Story:
The reel didn’t play. It *opened*. From inside came soundscapes—recordings of their own conversations in earlier observatories. Juna looked at herself, moving in reverse. Judai saw words he hadn’t yet written in his notebook appear in the margins. A deer walked across the frame, paused, and spoke: “This is not memory. This is substitution.” They sat still. The film closed around them like a clasp. When the machine finally cooled, they stood and found themselves younger, slightly. They left without touching the reel again.
